Getting cited in ChatGPT means your pages appear as sources when ChatGPT search answers questions your buyers ask. There is a lot of confident advice about this online, and much of it goes beyond the evidence. This guide sticks to what OpenAI documents, what Google says about AI search more broadly, and what we observe when we track citations. It makes no guarantees, because nobody can honestly offer them.
Step 1: allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl your site
OAI-SearchBot access is the first requirement because OpenAI documents it as the control for inclusion in ChatGPT search results. Check your robots.txt for rules that block it, and check your CDN or firewall settings, which sometimes block unfamiliar crawlers without anyone noticing.
OAI-SearchBot is separate from GPTBot. GPTBot relates to training OpenAI's models. You can allow search while making a different choice about training. Decide deliberately rather than inheriting a blanket block from a template.
Step 2: keep the SEO foundations sound
Standard SEO foundations still matter for AI answers, and Google says the same about its own AI features. Pages should return a 200 status, render important content in HTML, appear in your sitemap, and be linked internally. A page that search engines cannot index is unlikely to be retrieved as a source anywhere.
- Important content visible without requiring JavaScript to execute.
- No accidental noindex tags or canonical tags pointing elsewhere.
- A current XML sitemap that lists priority pages.
- Fast, stable pages with clear titles and headings.
Step 3: make facts consistent everywhere
Consistent facts reduce the chance that ChatGPT describes your company incorrectly. AI systems draw on many sources. If your pricing page says one thing, an old press release another, and a directory profile a third, answers may pick any of them. Audit your company name, category description, pricing, product names, and key facts across your site, review sites, directories, and social profiles, and correct outdated information.
Step 4: publish content worth citing
Pages worth citing answer a specific question clearly and contain evidence other pages do not. In practice that means:
- Open with a direct answer in the first one or two sentences.
- Use clear headings that match how people phrase questions.
- Include original data, methods, examples, or specific numbers with sources.
- State who wrote or reviewed the page and when it was updated.
- Be precise and fair, including tradeoffs and limits.
Original research helps because it gives other sources a reason to reference you. Our own technical hygiene benchmark publishes its method and raw data for exactly that reason.
Step 5: earn mentions on sources ChatGPT already uses
Earned mentions on credible third-party sources often matter as much as your own pages. When you track citations, you will see which publications, review sites, and communities appear repeatedly for your category. Those are your priority targets.
Be clear about the difference between earned digital PR and paid or undisclosed placements. Earned coverage comes from being useful: data, expert commentary, and genuine product merit. Paid placements should be disclosed as such. Undisclosed paid mentions create risk and erode trust if discovered.
Step 6: measure observed citations
Measurement means recording what ChatGPT actually cites for a fixed set of questions, over time. A simple framework:
| Metric | How to measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Citation rate | Share of tracked prompts where your domain is cited | Direct visibility signal |
| Mention rate | Share of prompts where your brand is named | Captures uncited mentions |
| Factual accuracy | Share of mentions that describe you correctly | Flags consistency problems |
| Source mix | Which third-party domains are cited in your category | Guides outreach priorities |
| Referral traffic | Sessions from chatgpt.com in analytics | Connects visibility to visits |
Results vary by prompt wording, user, and time, so run the same prompts on a schedule and track trends. Our guide to AI visibility metrics goes deeper on definitions.
What does not reliably work
Several popular tactics lack public evidence of impact on ChatGPT citations. There is no published evidence that llms.txt files cause citations; ours is an optional experiment. Schema markup helps search engines understand pages but is not shown to cause AI citations directly. Keyword stuffing, mass-produced pages, and undisclosed paid mentions carry more risk than reward.
Worked example: a 60-day citation plan
Here is an illustrative plan for a B2B software company that rarely appears in ChatGPT answers for its category.
- Days one to five: confirm OAI-SearchBot and search crawler access in robots.txt and at the firewall, and fix any indexing issues on priority pages.
- Days five to fifteen: choose twenty real buyer questions from sales calls, run them in ChatGPT search, and record answers, mentions, and cited sources as a baseline.
- Days fifteen to thirty: correct outdated facts on your own site and on the top five third-party profiles that appear in the baseline.
- Days thirty to forty-five: rewrite or create the three pages that best answer the most valuable questions, with direct answers and original evidence.
- Days forty-five to sixty: pitch data or expert commentary to two publications that ChatGPT cites often in your category, and rerun the prompt set.
Compare the second run with the baseline. Look for changes in mentions, citations, and factual accuracy. Expect noise; one run is not a trend. Continue monthly and adjust based on which sources and pages keep appearing.
How this fits with Google and other AI search
The work that helps with ChatGPT citations overlaps heavily with what helps in Google and other AI search features. Google has said that its standard SEO guidance applies to its AI features and that no special markup is required. Other assistants use their own crawlers and retrieval systems, so review access for the ones that matter to your buyers, but the content principles do not change: accessible, accurate, clear pages backed by credible sources.
This is why we treat AI discovery as part of one search program rather than a separate tactic. Our GEO service focuses on the third-party evidence and consistency side, and our AEO work focuses on your own pages and measurement. Both depend on the same technical foundations.
Be wary of anyone who promises a fixed number of citations or a guaranteed position in AI answers. Answers are generated per request and change over time. The honest promise is better inputs and transparent measurement of the outputs.
Common mistakes
- Blocking OAI-SearchBot through a firewall or copied robots.txt rule.
- Chasing tactics without fixing indexability first.
- Leaving outdated pricing and descriptions on third-party profiles.
- Publishing generic content with nothing original to cite.
- Judging success on one screenshot instead of tracked trends.
Who should own this work
AI citation work cuts across SEO, content, PR, and product marketing, so it needs a single owner. Without one, crawler access sits with engineering, factual accuracy with product marketing, and third-party mentions with PR, and nobody sees the whole picture.
The owner should keep the tracked prompt set, run the monthly measurement, maintain the list of approved company facts, and coordinate fixes. They do not need to do every task themselves. They need the authority to ask engineering to change a firewall rule, product marketing to update a profile, and content to rewrite a page.
Report progress in the same place as the rest of marketing performance. Citation and mention rates are useful leading indicators, but leadership will ultimately want to see referral visits from AI assistants, conversions from those visits, and buyers who say they first heard of you in an AI answer. Add a "how did you hear about us" field to your forms to capture that last signal, since it is hard to measure any other way.
Where to start
Check crawler access and indexability this week, then audit your core facts across your site and top profiles. Pick twenty buyer questions and record today's answers as a baseline. For how this fits with traditional search, read AEO vs SEO, and for managed help, see our AEO service.
